Vijay Jagirdar of Indore was fatally beaten on 1 November 1984 trying to stop a mob attacking his neighbour Balbir Singh's family.
Outside Balbir Singh's House, Jamuna Nagar
On the evening of 1 November 1984, in the violence that followed the assassination of Indira Gandhi, a mob of about 150 people armed with knives and sticks attacked the house of Balbir Singh, a Sikh, in Jamuna Nagar, Indore. Balbir Singh was the neighbour of Vijay Jagirdar.
The Jagirdar family took the Sikh family in. Jagirdar then went out to the crowd and asked them to leave the family alone. They ignored him.
When he tried to stop them by force, he was beaten until he lost consciousness. He was taken to hospital and died within half an hour.
