Baij Nath Singh, Ashoka Chakra

Vetnet Editorial

A civilian from Bhind district, Baij Nath Singh was killed pursuing dacoits in October 1969 and received the Ashoka Chakra posthumously.

Pursuit from Malpura

On 22 October 1969, dacoits led by a man named Saru Singh killed Mohar Singh and Uday Singh of Malpura village in Bhind district, Madhya Pradesh. People from Malpura and neighbouring Rahauli attacked the gang and drove it off. Another villager died in that clash.

Baij Nath Singh did not stop when the gang fled. By the published account, he followed the dacoits for about a kilometre and kept up a gunfight with them. He was overwhelmed and killed.

This narrative rests on a Wikipedia entry that cites the official awards site. The archived official page does not contain the citation, so the sequence above could not be checked against government text. Readers should treat its details as reported, not official.

Chachipura, Bhind district

He belonged to Chachipura village, also spelled Chahipura, in Bhind district. His father was Rup Singh. The same account says his family had a tradition of Army service. He himself is listed as a civilian.

The Ministry of Defence awards website records his Ashoka Chakra as posthumous and dates it to Republic Day 1971, more than a year after the action near Malpura.

What the citation recorded

Summary, not the official text: the official awards website lists Baij Nath Singh as a posthumous recipient of the Ashoka Chakra at Republic Day 1971, but the archived page carries no citation wording. Published accounts record that he pursued a dacoit gang after a killing in Malpura village, Bhind district, and exchanged fire with them until he was killed.
