Paratrooper Sanjog Chhetri of 9 Para (Special Forces) broke cover under fire at Hill Kaka on 22 April 2003, during Operation Sarp Vinash.
Snow and fire at Hill Kaka
At first light on 22 April 2003, an assault team of 20 from 9 Para (Special Forces) reached a militant hideout in the Hill Kaka area, in steep ground under about two feet of snow. The operation was named Sarp Vinash. Automatic fire from higher positions pinned the team for nearly half an hour.
Paratrooper Sanjog Chhetri broke cover, threw two grenades and began crawling up the slope under fire. Wikipedia's account says he covered close to 100 yards and killed one militant at close range, shot another after being hit several times, and killed a third with his knife before he died. The remaining militants were later killed by the team.
Sikkim to the Special Forces
Chhetri came from Sikkim. Sources disagree on his birth date, 26 January or 26 June 1982, and his service number is recorded as 9423984. Wikipedia says he enlisted with 5/11 Gorkha Rifles on 31 March 2001, then passed selection for the Para (Special Forces). The official portal's summary lists his Ashoka Chakra with the date 15 August 2003. Wikipedia describes him as the youngest recipient, which this article could not confirm from an official source.
