Second Lieutenant Rakesh Singh, Ashoka Chakra

Vetnet Editorial

Second Lieutenant Rakesh Singh of 22 Grenadiers died on 5 December 1992 near Shopian, under six months after his commission.

Cutting Off the Escape at Shopian

On 5 December 1992, near Shopian in Jammu and Kashmir, 2/Lt Rakesh Singh of 22 Grenadiers commanded B Company with orders to block the escape of eight militants. Honourpoint names the place as Paadarpur village.

Challenged, the militants opened fire. He led a counter-assault from the front and killed two. He was wounded in the shoulder and arm, and killed three more. Soldiers of his company accounted for the remaining three. He died later of his injuries.

Accounts differ in wording. The citation as reproduced calls the group Afghan Mujahedin and says he killed five single-handedly. The narrative beside it calls them terrorists.

Under Six Months in Uniform

He was born in Chandigarh on 18 September 1970, the son of Colonel Raj Singh, according to Wikipedia; the official record also names his father as Raj Singh. He joined the National Defence Academy's 78th course in 1986.

A Gazette notice cited by Wikipedia records his commission into 22 Grenadiers on 13 June 1992. He was 22 when he died. The Ministry of Defence lists his service number as IC-51242 and dates his posthumous Ashoka Chakra to Republic Day 1993.

What the citation recorded

Summary, not the official text: a citation reproduced by the Honourpoint memorial site says his company was tasked with cutting off eight fleeing militants, and credits him with killing five of them before he died of his wounds. The archived official awards page shows no citation wording.
