Major Rajiv Kumar Joon, SC, Ashoka Chakra

Vetnet Editorial

Major Rajiv Kumar Joon of 22 Grenadiers killed two militants in a house basement at Arijan Dessar, Anantnag, on 16 September 1994.

The basement at Arijan Dessar

At about 1300 hours on 16 September 1994, a search party under Major Rajiv Kumar Joon was clearing the village of Arijan Dessar in Anantnag district when it found two militants hiding in a concealed space inside a house. They came out firing and wounded a member of the party, then dropped into the basement and fired from an opening.

Joon crawled round to a loophole on the outer side of the basement, threw in two grenades and fired through it, killing one man. The other kept firing from a corner. Joon went back to the loophole to reach him, and was shot in the throat and chest in the dark at very close range. He refused to pull back and fired across the basement, killing the second militant. He died of his wounds.

An earlier Shaurya Chakra

Joon, born on 5 December 1969 in Rohtak district, Haryana, was commissioned into 22 Grenadiers on 8 June 1991. He already held the Shaurya Chakra; accounts differ on the operation behind it. The award is recorded in the Gazette of India of 4 March 1995, according to the references on his Wikipedia entry. The official portal's summary shows a different date, 15 August 1996, which this article could not reconcile.
