Lieutenant Triveni Singh, Ashoka Chakra

Vetnet Editorial

Lieutenant Triveni Singh of 5 JAK LI killed two attackers at Jammu Railway Station on 2 January 2004 and died of his wounds.

Over-bridge at Jammu Railway Station

At about 1850 hours on 2 January 2004, two armed men entered Jammu Railway Station and fired on passengers, killing three and wounding 15. Lieutenant Triveni Singh, adjutant of 5 Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry, reached the station leading a Quick Reaction Team. The Tribune reported that he arrived within ten minutes.

The team began searching the station with the police. At about 2020 hours a gunman hidden under the staircase of the over-bridge fired and wounded a policeman. Singh ran at him and killed him at close range. The second gunman opened fire and threw a grenade. Singh was hit in the upper lip and seriously hurt. He closed with the man and killed him, then died of his injuries.

How many attackers

The Tribune's report of 4 January 2004 and his profile both give two attackers killed by him. Some later accounts say three; the two-attacker version is used here because it matches the contemporary report and the published citation.

Commissioned in December 2001

He was born on 1 February 1978 at Namkum, Ranchi, and his family came from Pathankot. He was commissioned on 8 December 2001. President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam presented the award to his father, Captain Janmej Singh, in the 2004 Republic Day parade.

What the citation recorded

Summary, not the official text: the citation as published by a memorial site records that two armed men entered Jammu Railway Station at 1850 hours on 2 January 2004, killing three people and wounding 15. He arrived with a Quick Reaction Team, killed one attacker, was fatally wounded by the second, and killed him at close quarters before he died.
