Vetnet Editorial

Randhir Prasad Verma, SP Dhanbad, was shot dead confronting armed robbers at a Bank of India branch on 3 January 1991.

The Bank of India Branch, Dhanbad

On 3 January 1991, armed men attempted to rob a Bank of India branch in Dhanbad, then in Bihar. Randhir Prasad Verma, the Superintendent of Police, went to the bank with only his bodyguards and entered the building.

Under heavy fire, by one account, he drew his service revolver and told the robbers to surrender. He was badly wounded. He kept firing and was then fatally shot.

Sources differ on details. A philatelic account says the branch was at Hirapur and that he shot one robber. Wikipedia describes the Dhanbad branch and says he killed two attackers armed with AK-47 rifles. Neither figure could be checked against official text.

Supaul, the IPS and a 2004 Stamp

Wikipedia gives his birthplace as Jagatpur in Supaul, Bihar, and his birth year as 1952. The philatelic account says he joined the Indian Police Service in 1974.

The Ministry of Defence awards website records his Ashoka Chakra as posthumous and dated 1991. The Department of Posts issued a stamp for him on 8 October 2004, in a pair with one for Neerja Bhanot.

What the citation recorded

Summary, not the official text: the official awards page lists Randhir Prasad Verma as a posthumous recipient in 1991 and shows no citation wording in the archived copy. Published accounts record that he confronted armed men robbing a Bank of India branch in Dhanbad, shot at least one of them, and was killed.
