Naik Nirbhay Singh Sisodia, Ashoka Chakra

Vetnet Editorial

Naik Nirbhay Singh Sisodia of 15 Kumaon silenced a machine gun with a grenade at Amritsar on 6 June 1984, covering his company commander.

The Porthole Gun

On 6 June 1984, during Operation Blue Star at the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar, Naik Nirbhay Singh Sisodia commanded a light machine gun detachment in A Company, 15 Kumaon. His gun was covering his company commander, who was advancing in the open.

He spotted a light machine gun firing from a porthole in a fortified building, a direct threat to the officer. He moved toward it and was hit in the leg. He kept crawling until he could throw a grenade into the position, and the gun stopped.

A second burst killed him.

Two Versions of the Last Moments

The memorial profile on Honourpoint carries both a narrative and the citation, and they differ. The narrative has him going forward alone and dying moments later as he dragged himself back. The citation has his Number 2 following him and says he was killed outright. Neither version can be settled from the sources found.

The Ministry of Defence lists him as service number 4167546A of 15 Kumaon, son of Nand Singh Sisodia and Basant Kunwar, with domicile at Jhalawar, Rajasthan. Some sources spell the surname Sisodiya. His Ashoka Chakra dates to Republic Day 1985.

What the citation recorded

Summary, not the official text: a citation reproduced by the Honourpoint memorial site says that when his company commander charged alone, Naik Nirbhay Singh ordered his Number 2 to follow, reached the base of a building to give covering fire, and was killed by a second burst while attacking a machine gun position.
