Constable Kamlesh Kumari of the CRPF was killed at Parliament House on 13 December 2001 after raising the alarm as attackers arrived.
Iron Gate No. 1, Parliament House
Constable Kamlesh Kumari was on duty at Parliament House on 13 December 2001 when five attackers drove in, in an Ambassador car with the registration DL-3CJ-1527. Her Wikipedia entry and press accounts say she was posted at Iron Gate No. 1, approached the car, grew suspicious and ran back to seal the gate, and that she raised the alarm as the attackers opened fire. She was shot and died there. Reports put the number of bullets at eleven.
The Home Minister's statement to the Lok Sabha on 18 December 2001 lists her among those killed. It does not describe her part at the gate, and gives a separate account of the closing of Gate No. 11. The CRPF's own record says she showed extraordinary courage and presence of mind in the gunfight of about 30 minutes, in which all five attackers died.
From Allahabad to Bravo Company
She joined the CRPF in 1994 and first served with 104 Rapid Action Force at Allahabad. She moved to the 88 Mahila Battalion on 12 July 2001 and to its Bravo Company, which guarded Parliament during sessions. Her family came from Sikanderpur in Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh. She left her husband, Avdhesh, and two daughters. The CRPF records her Ashoka Chakra as posthumous.
