Jagdish Prasad Yadav of Parliament House security ran after a suspicious car on 13 December 2001 and was killed in the attack that followed.
Running after the Ambassador
At about 11.40 a.m. on 13 December 2001, an Ambassador car bearing registration DL-3CJ-1527 entered the Parliament House complex and moved towards Building Gate No. 12. The Vice-President's cars were parked at Gate No. 11. Jagdish Prasad Yadav, a Security Assistant of the Watch and Ward Staff, doubted the identity of the car and ran after it.
That account comes from Home Minister L. K. Advani's statement to the Lok Sabha on 18 December 2001. The statement says the car was forced to turn back and, in doing so, hit the Vice-President's car. When security personnel challenged the occupants, all five jumped out and began firing.
Eight security personnel lost
The statement names Yadav among those killed that day, and says eight security personnel died in all. Delhi Police, CRPF and ITBP personnel returned the attackers' fire, and all five were killed. Press Information Bureau releases describe Yadav as a Security Assistant of the Rajya Sabha Secretariat. He and his colleague Matbar Singh Negi received the Ashoka Chakra posthumously, as did CRPF Constable Kamlesh Kumari.
