Lt Col Harsh Uday Singh Gaur of 10 Bihar was killed leading an operation in Baramulla district on 29 November 1994.
The Village in Baramulla District
On 29 November 1994, information reached 10 Bihar that militants were hiding in a village in Baramulla district. Lieutenant Colonel Harsh Uday Singh Gaur decided to lead the operation himself. Two companies were placed to block the ways out.
Sources disagree on the militant numbers, with 10 to 12 in Honourpoint's account and 15 to 17 in Wikipedia's, and on the village's spelling, given as Bazipora, Bazipura and Dazipura.
By Honourpoint's account, fire opened at about 7 a.m. Gaur moved to a flank under fire and killed three militants. He then crawled forward and destroyed a machine gun post with a grenade, killing a fourth. Hit by several bullets, he refused evacuation. He died later that day.
Hardoi
He was born on 1 July 1953 in Hardoi district, Uttar Pradesh, and was 41. The Ministry of Defence lists his father as R S Gaur, his domicile as Hardoi and his service number as IC-36177.
Wikipedia describes him as acting commanding officer of the battalion, and Honourpoint as its commanding officer. The official record gives his rank at the time of the award as lieutenant colonel. His Ashoka Chakra dates to 26 January 1995.
What the citation recorded
Summary, not the official text: the official awards website records a posthumous Ashoka Chakra for an act of gallantry in Jammu and Kashmir. A citation reproduced by the Honourpoint memorial site says he personally led an operation against foreign militants in a Baramulla village at about 7 a.m. and was mortally wounded in the exchange of fire.
